Pastor E.A. Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), recently shared how he found strength through the example of Evangelist Rev. Uma Ukpai following the sudden death of his son more than three years ago.
Pastor Dare Adeboye, the third child of Pastor Adeboye, passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2021, in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, where he resided with his wife, Temiloluwa, and their three daughters.
During a special service on January 10, 2025, held at the International Worship Centre in Uyo to celebrate Rev. Ukpai’s 80th birthday, Pastor Adeboye recounted how Ukpai’s unwavering Christian faith became a source of comfort and inspiration during his darkest moment. Ukpai, who had suffered the tragic loss of two children in a car accident, showed resilience that helped guide Adeboye through his own grief.
In Pastor Adeboye’s words:
“If you truly desire to serve God, you must be ready to do so in both good times and bad. The darkest moment of my life came when I lost my son without any warning. Just a few days before his passing, my son had called to tell me how successful the weekend program was and to thank me for my prayers. Then, on Tuesday night, I received the heartbreaking news that he was gone.
I had to preach just a few days later, and in that moment, one person who gave me strength was Rev. Uma Ukpai. I knew he had lost more than one child in a single day, yet he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to serve God. His example gave me the strength I needed when I was at my lowest.”
This powerful testimony underscored the strength that faith can provide, even in the face of the deepest personal loss.
