Why Abia Deserves an Airport: A Strategic Argument for Development

By: Enobong Ukpong

The debate about whether Abia State needs an airport has drawn diverse opinions. While some argue against it, citing the proximity of an airport in neighboring Imo State, this reasoning fails to consider the broader economic and strategic implications.

Nigeria’s 36 states boast 34 airports, and many of these states share borders. Yet, that did not stop them from constructing their own, recognizing the economic and infrastructural benefits.

Abia State is a prime candidate for an airport, especially considering the economic vitality of Aba, a city widely recognized as a major commercial hub in Nigeria.

Aba transcends being a regional market; it is a global player in trade and manufacturing. Every year, thousands of traders from across Nigeria and neighboring countries visit Aba to purchase its renowned textiles, leather goods, and shoes products mostly manufactured locally.

The Ariaria International Market, known for its creativity and industrial innovation, is a testament to Aba’s economic importance. This market not only boosts Abia’s GDP but also underpins the state’s reputation as an entrepreneurial powerhouse.

With such vibrant commerce, improved infrastructure is essential to sustain growth, attract investors, and expand global trade opportunities.

When ranked among Nigeria’s leading commercial cities, Aba stands tall alongside:

Lagos – The economic capital of Nigeria.

Onitsha – Home to West Africa’s largest markets.

Kano – Northern Nigeria’s commercial hub.

Port Harcourt – A center for oil and gas industries.

Nnewi – Renowned for its industrial output, often called the “Japan of Africa.”
If Kano and Nnewi justify access to airports, why shouldn’t Aba a city at the heart of Nigeria’s trade and manufacturing receive the same?

An airport in Abia State would bring numerous benefits, including:

Reduced Transport Costs: Easier movement of goods to and from Aba would lower logistics costs for traders and manufacturers, boosting profits.

Attracting International Buyers: More global traders would visit Aba, not only to purchase goods but to experience its dynamic manufacturing sector firsthand.
Regional Connectivity: Abia’s central location in the Southeast makes it a strategic hub, serving nearby cities like Umuahia, Owerri, Uyo Ikot, and others.

Aba is more than a city, it is a symbol of Nigeria’s entrepreneurial spirit and industrial creativity. Arguing that Abia does not need an airport denies Aba the infrastructure necessary to reach its full economic potential. The benefits of an airport far outweigh the costs.

Abia deserves an airport not as a luxury, but as a necessity to complement its thriving commercial sector and propel it to greater heights.

Governor Alex Ori is indeed a visionary leader and I call on the good people of Abia State and Nigerians to support and key into the vision of this hardworking Governor.
