ELECTRICITY RELIEF FOR ITU COMMUNITIES AS LGA, PHEDC REACH AGREEMENT

Itu Local Government Council and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) have reached a landmark agreement aimed at improving electricity supply and stabilizing tariffs in the area.

In a meeting held, Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at the Conference Hall of the Local Government Council, the Executive Chairman, Hon Ubong Nkutt, and top PHEDC management officials from Port Harcourt and Uyo discussed critical issues affecting the community. The meeting was also attended by prominent indigenes of Itu who have been advocating for fair electricity tariffs and maintenance of electricity infrastructure.

Key agreements reached in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) include:

  1. Tariff Stability PHEDC will maintain Itu Local Government in Band B, ensuring a minimum of 16 hours of electricity daily, with no changes to the current tariff
  2. Infrastructure Maintenance PHEDC will repair and replace faulty facilities, maintaining a good maintenance culture for all their facilities within the local government area.
  3. Community Engagement PHEDC will hold regular community-company engagement meetings to keep customers informed about their activities in the area.
  4. Collaboration PHEDC will liaise with the local government’s electricity committee, headed by Engr Tony James, whenever they need to access and maintain Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) facilities in the area.
  5. The Executive Chairman expressed gratitude for the successful deliberations and urged PHEDC to adhere to the agreed terms. He emphasized that Itu people are peace-loving and receptive to investors – individuals or corporate bodies.
