The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly ( AKHA) on Wednesday, passed a bill for a law to further amend the Independent Electoral Commission Law, Cap. 69, Laws of Akwa Ibom State 2022.
The new law allows the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) to determine the swearing-in date for local government chairmen and councillors, after the much anticipated October 5, local government election.
December 7, 2024 was earlier provided in the old law as date for the swearing-in date for new local government officials in the state.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Elder ) Udeme Otong, shortly after the accelerated passage of the bill, directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Nsikak Orok, to communicate the development to Governor Umo Eno for further action.
Also at plenary, the Akwa Ibom State Correctional Service (Establishment) Law, Akwa Ibom State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption (Establishment) Law, and the Akwa Ibom State Agricultural Development Trust Fund (Establishment) Law passed through first reading, and were referred to the Committee on Business, Rules, Ethics and Privilege for rescheduling.
Also at plenary, the proposed Akwa Ibom State 2025-2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) submitted to the House by Governor Umo Eno was read by the Clerk on the floor of the Assembly for the Legislative action
Meanwhile, the House has adjourned plenary to Monday, 26th August 2024.
