The Nigeria Football Federation is reportedly eager to bring back José Peseiro as the manager of the Super Eagles.
The 64-year-old was appointed manager of the Nigeria national team in May 2022, replacing Austin Eguavoen, who acted on an interim basis and led Nigeria to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The Portuguese trainer saw out his contract with the NFF at AFCON 2024, during which he guided the Super Eagles to a second-place finish. The three-time African champions lost 2-1 to the host nation Ivory Coast in the final of the tournament.
After his departure, Peseiro was replaced by one of his assistants, Finidi George, who resigned after the June defeat to Benin in 2026 World Cup qualifying.
Finidi’s departure has left the Nigeria managerial position vacant, with many coaches linked to the job.
Emerging reports in the media indicate that Peseiro could make a quick return to the position he left in February.
Gerald Baloyi, an agent with South African interest Vodia Sports International Management, stated in a recent interview with Kickoff that there is interest from the Nigerian national team in securing Peseiro’s services for a second time.
“Yes, Vodia Sports International Management offered Peseiro to Sundowns, though the Nigerian national team are interested in bringing him to take over again,” Baloyi said.
During his time with the Super Eagles, the Portuguese manager helmed 22 games, winning 10 of them, drawing five and enduring seven defeats.
