Former Miss World, Agbani Darego, has opened up about a brief but unforgettable encounter with football legend Nwankwo Kanu that could have blossomed into a love story. In a nostalgic reflection, the beauty queen shared her memories of meeting Kanu at a celebratory dinner hosted in her honour by then-Governor Peter Odili at the Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, following her historic Miss World win in 2001.
Darego recalled how the Arsenal superstar approached her during the event, introducing himself with a warm smile and a memorable line: “I am Nwankwo Kanu, I play football at Arsenal. Can I be your King?”
Though captivated by his charm and Arabian fragrance, their moment was cut short when the Governor summoned her to join him and his wife at the high table. Despite her hopes of reconnecting with Kanu that evening, he never returned to continue the conversation.
“In those days, communication was not as easy, there was no social media, and mobile phones weren’t that handy. I eventually moved on, taking it as one of those normal games from footballers,” she admitted.
Reflecting on the moment, Darego confessed that she blushes whenever she sees Kanu’s photos, imagining what might have been if he had been more persistent.
