A fresh wave of protests has hit Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State, over the proposed Abia Airport project. On Monday, women from the semi-urban community blocked Abia State government officials from accessing the Umuomainta Women Development Hall, where a planned meeting with selected people was to be held.
This protest follows a similar demonstration two weeks ago at Umuezenta Nsulu, with tensions spreading to nearby villages like Umuosu Nsulu.
Speaking to journalists, Nze Chukwudinma Ikpo, a resident of Nsulu, clarified that the community is not opposed to the airport project. He revealed that Nsulu residents had already donated land for the project, and the state government had issued a Certificate of Occupancy for the site.
Ikpo explained that the current protests are fueled by the government’s decision to abandon the approved site, which is far from residential areas and has no encumbrances, in favour of acquiring land closer to homes and farmlands.
It was also alleged that the state government has been engaging with the wrong people, rather than consulting the legitimate landowners.
